2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 Corinthians 5:21 captures the heart of the gospel: Jesus, who was completely without sin, took the judgment our sin deserved so that we could receive a righteousness we could never earn. At the cross, Christ willingly stood in the place of sinners, and through faith in Him, believers are reconciled to God and counted righteous before Him.
This verse reminds us that our relationship with God rests not on our ability to be “good enough,” but on what Christ has already accomplished. That should produce both deep gratitude and humble obedience. We no longer have to live trying to prove ourselves to God; instead, we can live from the security of knowing that our acceptance comes through Jesus.
Daily application: When guilt, failure, or inadequacy weighs on you, remember that your standing before God is based on Christ’s righteousness, not your record. Let that grace move you today toward repentance where needed, gratitude for the cross, and a desire to reflect Christ in the way you treat others.
