How God Speaks To Us

A Daily Devotional and Meditations on God's Word

INTRODUCTION

God is not silent—He delights to speak to His people. From the opening pages of Scripture to the present day, the Lord has revealed Himself in ways that guide, comfort, and correct us. Yet His voice is not always dramatic or loud; often, it comes through ordinary means that invite us to listen with faith and discernment. This devotional explores five key ways God speaks—through His Word, His Spirit, His people, our God-given wisdom, and the circumstances of life—reminding us that His guidance is both personal and purposeful.

HOW GOD SPEAKS

1. Commanding Scripture

God's Word is His primary voice to His people. Scripture is not just informative—it is authoritative, shaping our beliefs and guiding our actions. When we open the Bible, we encounter God's commands, promises, and wisdom for life.

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness." — 2 Timothy 3:16

2. Compelling Spirit

The Holy Spirit speaks to our hearts, convicting us of sin, guiding us into truth, and prompting us toward obedience. His voice is gentle yet powerful, aligning us with God's will.

"But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth." — John 16:13
"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." — 2 Corinthians 3:17
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." — Galatians 5:22-23 ESV

3. Counseling Saints

God often speaks through the wisdom and counsel of fellow believers. The body of Christ is designed for mutual encouragement, correction, and discernment, helping us hear God more clearly together.

"Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed." — Proverbs 15:22
"Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." — Proverbs 27:17 ESV
"Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future." — Proverbs 19:20 ESV

4. Common Sense

God gave us minds to reason and discern. While faith is essential, wisdom and sound judgment are also gifts from Him. Common sense, rooted in godly principles, helps us make choices that honor Him.

"The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps." — Proverbs 14:15
"One who wanders from the way of good sense will rest in the assembly of the dead." — Proverbs 21:16 ESV

5. Circumstantial Signs

God can use circumstances—open doors, closed opportunities, or providential events—to direct our paths. While not every situation is a "sign," God's sovereignty ensures that He works through life's details to guide us.

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." — Romans 8:28
"And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;" — Acts 2:19 ESV

God graciously speaks to us in many ways—through His Word, His Spirit, His people, our God-given wisdom, and even the circumstances of life. Yet all these voices find their clarity and authority in the commanding Scripture. Without daily time in God's Word, we risk misinterpreting the Spirit's promptings, overlooking wise counsel, or misreading signs around us. By anchoring ourselves in Scripture each day, we train our hearts to recognize His voice in every other way He speaks, walking confidently in His guidance and growing deeper in relationship with Him.
