2 Corinthians 13:5 ESV
Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!
Paul’s exhortation is not meant to create fear in genuine believers but to encourage honest self-examination. Rather than comparing ourselves to others or relying on past experiences, we are called to evaluate whether our lives reflect a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. True faith is evidenced by a heart that desires Christ, repents of sin, and is being transformed by the work of the Holy Spirit. Self-examination is a healthy spiritual discipline that keeps us humble, dependent on God’s grace, and focused on Christ rather than our own performance.
Application: Take time today to prayerfully ask the Lord to search your heart (Psalm 139:23–24). Consider whether your attitudes, priorities, and actions reflect the presence of Christ within you. Where God reveals areas that need repentance or renewed obedience, respond with gratitude rather than discouragement, knowing that He is faithful to continue His work in those who belong to Him (Philippians 1:6). Regular self-examination is not about earning God’s acceptance—it is about growing in intimacy with Christ and allowing His life to be increasingly evident through yours.
