Numbers 14:18 ESV
‘The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’
Numbers 14:18 reminds us that God’s character holds mercy and justice together. He is “slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love,” willing to forgive rebellion and sin; yet He does not simply ignore sin or pretend our choices have no consequences. His patience should never be mistaken for indifference. It is an invitation to repent, return, and receive His mercy.
For us, this verse offers both comfort and conviction. We can approach God honestly when we fail, trusting that His love is greater than our sin. At the same time, His holiness calls us to take obedience seriously. A grateful response is not to take His grace for granted, but to let His patience lead us toward a life that increasingly reflects His character.
