James 5:10-11 ESV
As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.
James 5:10-11 points to two examples of endurance under hardship: the prophets who spoke for God and suffered for it, and Job, whose story is invoked not for his suffering itself but for what came after — “we count them blessed which endure” because they held on and saw where God’s compassion led. It’s a striking move: James doesn’t ask us to admire the prophets’ pain, but their patience in it, and he calls Job’s perseverance a template not because Job never questioned or grieved (he clearly did, at length), but because he stayed in relationship with God through it rather than walking away.
What stands out is the closing phrase — “the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.” After holding up two hard stories, James doesn’t end on grit or willpower; he ends on God’s character. The point isn’t “endure because you’re strong enough,” but “endure because the one you’re waiting on is compassionate and will not leave the story unfinished.” That reframes patience less as gritted-teeth stoicism and more as trust that suffering isn’t the last word — which is probably why James places it right before he talks about prayer in the verses that follow.
