Romans 12:3 ESV
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.”
Paul reminds believers that a right view of ourselves begins with God’s grace. Everything we have—our salvation, abilities, opportunities, and spiritual gifts—is a gift from Him, leaving no room for pride or feelings of superiority. At the same time, “sober judgment” does not mean thinking too little of ourselves; it means seeing ourselves accurately as people loved by God, dependent on Him, and uniquely equipped to serve His purposes.
As we walk with Christ, humility frees us to celebrate the gifts of others while faithfully using the gifts God has entrusted to us. Rather than seeking recognition or comparison, we can serve with gratitude, confidence, and a heart that desires to glorify God. True humility is not self-focused—it is Christ-focused, recognizing that every good thing comes from Him and should point others back to Him.
