Galatians 5:19-21 ESV
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Paul’s list of the “works of the flesh” is sobering because it exposes the natural direction of a heart that is not surrendered to the Holy Spirit. The sins he mentions—whether sexual immorality, jealousy, fits of anger, selfish ambition, or envy—are not merely isolated actions; they reveal a deeper problem within the human heart. Paul warns that a lifestyle characterized by these things is incompatible with the kingdom of God. His purpose is not to drive believers to despair, but to call them to honest self-examination and wholehearted repentance.
For those who belong to Christ, this passage is also a reminder of the transforming power of the gospel. We are no longer slaves to the desires of the flesh but have been given the Holy Spirit to lead us into a new way of living. Each day we are called to reject sinful patterns, depend on God’s grace, and pursue the fruit of the Spirit that follows in the next verses. As we walk with Christ, our lives increasingly reflect His holiness, bringing glory to God and pointing others to the hope found in Him alone.
