Philippians 3:8-9 ESV
Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—
Philippians 3:8–9 (ESV) reminds us that knowing Jesus Christ is worth more than anything this world can offer. Paul, who once took great pride in his religious achievements, status, and obedience to the law, now counts all of it as loss compared to the surpassing value of a personal relationship with Christ. His greatest desire is not to build his own reputation but to “gain Christ” and be found in Him, clothed not in his own righteousness but in the righteousness that comes through faith.
This passage challenges believers to examine where they place their confidence. Our acceptance before God is never earned through good works, morality, or religious performance—it is a gift received through faith in Jesus. When Christ becomes our greatest treasure, the things we once depended on lose their hold on our hearts. True joy, peace, and security are found not in what we accomplish for God, but in what Christ has accomplished for us on the cross.
