Romans 3:20 ESV
For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
Romans 3:20 reminds us that God’s law was never intended to be a ladder by which we climb into His favor. Instead, it acts like a mirror, revealing the reality of our sinful condition and our inability to make ourselves righteous through our own efforts. The more clearly we understand God’s holy standard, the more we recognize our desperate need for His grace. This verse humbles our pride and prepares our hearts to receive the good news of the gospel.
For believers today, this truth is both sobering and freeing. We no longer strive to earn God’s acceptance by our performance, knowing that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ rather than works of the law. When we fall short, we can honestly confess our sin and rest in the finished work of Christ. Romans 3:20 calls us to abandon self-reliance, embrace God’s mercy, and live each day with gratitude for the righteousness that comes through faith alone.
