Matthew 5:5 ESV
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
In a world that often celebrates self-promotion, power, and control, Jesus declares a surprising blessing on the meek. Biblical meekness is not weakness or passivity; it is strength submitted to God. A meek person trusts God’s timing, God’s justice, and God’s ways rather than demanding their own.
Jesus Himself is the perfect example of meekness. Though He possessed all authority, He humbled Himself, served others, and remained obedient to the Father. The meek recognize that everything they have comes from God and therefore live with humility, gentleness, and dependence on Him.
The promise that they “shall inherit the earth” reminds believers that God’s kingdom operates differently from the world’s systems. Those who surrender their lives to God may not always appear to be winning now, but they have an eternal inheritance secured by Christ.
Reflection: Where am I striving to control outcomes instead of trusting God? True strength is found not in asserting ourselves, but in humbly submitting our lives to the Lord and resting in His promises.
