Daily Verse

1 Thessalonians 5:19–22 (ESV) reminds believers to remain sensitive and obedient to the work of the Holy Spirit while exercising wisdom and discernment:

“Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.”

Paul gives a balanced picture of the Christian life. On one hand, we are warned not to “quench the Spirit” by resisting God’s prompting, ignoring conviction, or becoming spiritually cold. God often works through His Word, prayer, wise counsel, and the encouragement of other believers. On the other hand, Paul also tells us not to accept everything blindly. We are to test what we hear against Scripture and cling to what is true and good.

The Christian life is not about being skeptical of everything or gullible about everything—it is about spiritual discernment. As we stay close to God, we learn to recognize His leading, embrace what honors Christ, and turn away from what weakens our walk with Him.

Practical application: Ask yourself: Am I open to the Spirit’s work in my life, and am I carefully filtering influences through God’s truth? Stay tender to God’s voice, grounded in Scripture, and intentional about avoiding even the appearance of what pulls you away from Him.
