Romans 8:5 ESV

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

Romans 8:5 reminds us that the direction of our thoughts shapes the direction of our lives. Paul contrasts two mindsets: one focused on the “flesh” (self-centered desires and worldly priorities) and one focused on the Spirit (God’s will, truth, and eternal things). What consistently fills our minds eventually influences our attitudes, decisions, and actions.

For believers, spiritual growth begins with intentionally setting our minds on the things of God through prayer, Scripture, worship, and obedience. This verse invites us to ask: What occupies my thoughts most each day? As we surrender our minds to the Spirit, God gradually transforms our hearts and helps us live in a way that reflects Christ.

Practical Application: Take a few moments today to evaluate what is shaping your mindset. Choose one intentional habit—such as meditating on Scripture during your commute, listening to worship, or praying through a concern—to help refocus your thoughts on the Spirit rather than distractions or worries.
