Colossians 2:13-14 ESV
And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
These verses remind us of the dramatic transformation that happens through Christ. Paul describes us as spiritually “dead” because of sin—unable to save ourselves or restore our relationship with God. Yet through Jesus, God intervenes with mercy, making us spiritually alive and fully forgiven. This is not partial forgiveness or earned acceptance; it is complete grace.
The image of our “record of debt” being nailed to the cross is powerful. Every sin, failure, and accusation that stood against us was paid for by Jesus. Believers no longer live under condemnation but in freedom and gratitude. Because Christ has canceled our debt, we can stop carrying guilt that God has already removed and instead walk confidently in new life with Him.
Practical Application: When guilt or shame resurfaces, remember the debt has already been paid. Spend time thanking God specifically for His forgiveness, and ask yourself: Am I living like someone still condemned, or someone made alive in Christ?
