Proverbs 13:20 ESV

Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.

This proverb highlights the powerful influence of relationships. The people we spend the most time with shape our thinking, habits, values, and ultimately our direction in life. Wise companions encourage growth, godly character, and sound decisions, while unhealthy influences can slowly pull us away from God’s best.

For believers, this verse is both an encouragement and a warning. It calls us to intentionally seek friendships and mentors who strengthen our faith and sharpen our walk with Christ. At the same time, it reminds us to be mindful of influences that lead toward compromise or poor choices. Wisdom is often caught as much as it is taught.

Practical Application: Take an honest look at your closest influences. Ask: Are the people around me helping me grow spiritually and make wise decisions? Intentionally invest time with mature, godly people who challenge and encourage you in your walk with Christ while also being a positive influence to others.
