John 13:16 ESV

Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

In Gospel of John 13:16, Jesus reminds His disciples that “a servant is not greater than his master.” This statement comes right after He humbly washed their feet—an act that flipped their expectations of leadership upside down. The One they called Lord took the lowest place, not to impress them, but to show them the true posture of a follower. If Jesus was willing to serve in such a personal, sacrificial way, then no act of service is beneath those who belong to Him.

This verse challenges the instinct to seek status, recognition, or comfort. Following Christ means embracing His example, not just admiring it. Real spiritual maturity is seen in quiet obedience and humble service—especially when no one is watching. When we remember that we are not above our Master, it frees us to serve others with the same grace and humility He has shown us.
