For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
1 Peter 2:21 (ESV) reminds us that following Christ is not just about believing in Him, but patterning our lives after Him—especially in suffering. Jesus did not merely endure hardship; He endured it for us and as an example for us. He responded to injustice, pain, and rejection without retaliation or sin, entrusting Himself fully to the Father. That sets a standard that’s hard to accept if you prefer comfort or control.
The truth is, most people want the benefits of Christ without the cost of imitation. But this verse won’t let you stay there. To walk in His steps means choosing restraint when you could strike back, choosing faith when circumstances feel unfair, and trusting God’s purposes even when you don’t see immediate relief. That kind of life shapes real spiritual maturity—it’s not easy, but it’s how Christ is formed in you.
