1 John 4:8-9 ESV
Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
1 John 4:8–9 (ESV) centers everything on one defining truth: “God is love.” Not just that He shows love or gives love—but that love is His very nature. And this love isn’t abstract or sentimental; it’s proven through action: “God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.”
This reshapes how we understand both God and love itself. Love is not merely a feeling or intention—it is sacrificial, initiating, and life-giving. God didn’t wait for us to reach for Him; He moved first, sending Jesus Christ when we were still far from Him. That’s the standard.
It also raises the bar for us. If we claim to know God, our lives should reflect that same kind of love—not shallow or convenient, but intentional and costly. Real love moves toward others, especially when it’s undeserved.
