Matthew 20:26-28 ESV

It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

In Gospel of Matthew 20:26–28, Jesus completely redefines greatness. In a world that measures success by status, power, and recognition, He points in the opposite direction: “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” True greatness in God’s kingdom is not about being elevated above others, but about lowering ourselves to serve them.

Jesus doesn’t just teach this—He embodies it. As the Son of Man, He came “not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” The ultimate picture of leadership is not control, but sacrifice. Not self-promotion, but self-giving love.

This challenges us to examine our motives. Do we seek influence for our own recognition, or are we willing to serve without being seen? Kingdom leadership looks like humility in action—choosing to meet needs, carry burdens, and put others before ourselves.

Reflection: Ask yourself today, Where can I choose service over status? True greatness isn’t found in climbing higher, but in kneeling lower—just like Christ.
