1 John 4:17 ESV

By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world

In 1 John 4:17, we’re shown the end goal of God’s work in us: that love would be “perfected” so that we can have confidence on the day of judgment. That’s a bold statement. Confidence before a holy God doesn’t come from our performance—it comes from His love fully shaping our lives.

John makes it even clearer: “because as He is, so also are we in this world.” This means our identity is now rooted in Christ. We don’t approach God in fear, hoping we’ve done enough—we stand in the reality of what Jesus has already done, and we live that out through love.

If fear dominates your spiritual life—fear of failure, fear of judgment—it’s a sign you may be trying to stand on your own merit instead of resting in God’s love. Perfected love pushes that fear out and replaces it with assurance.

Application:

Ask yourself honestly: Am I living from a place of confidence in God’s love, or fear of falling short? Then take a step to lean into His love today—whether through prayer, worship, or extending that same love to someone else.
