John7:16-17 ESV

So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.

In John 7:16-17, Jesus presents a profound challenge to the intellectualism of his day by shifting the pursuit of truth from a purely academic exercise to a matter of the will. By stating that his teaching is not his own but comes from the Father, he emphasizes his divine authority and total alignment with God. The pivot in verse 17 is particularly striking: the promise that anyone who chooses to do God’s will will recognize the origin of the teaching. This suggests that spiritual clarity is not merely the result of high-level reasoning, but of an active, surrendered heart. It implies that "knowing" the truth of God requires a lived obedience; we don't always understand in order to obey, but rather, we obey in order to truly understand.
