isaiah 53:5 ESV
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5 reveals the heart of the gospel in one powerful sentence: “He was pierced for our transgressions… and by His wounds we are healed.” This verse reminds us that our sin is not minimized—it is serious enough to require suffering—but it is also fully paid for through Christ. Jesus did not suffer for His own wrongdoing, but for ours. Every wound He bore was an act of substitution, taking on what we deserved so we could receive what we never earned: peace with God and spiritual restoration.
This should reshape how we live. We don’t carry guilt as if the debt is still unpaid, and we don’t treat sin lightly as if it costs nothing. Instead, we walk in gratitude and humility, remembering that our healing—spiritual, relational, and eternal—came at a great price. The cross is both a comfort and a call: rest in what Christ has done, and live in a way that reflects the weight and wonder of that sacrifice.
