John 7:18 ESV

The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.

Jesus contrasts two motives that shape a person’s words and actions: self-glory or God’s glory. Those who speak merely from themselves often aim to elevate their own reputation, influence, or approval. But the person who truly represents God is concerned with honoring the One who sent them. Jesus presents Himself as the perfect example—His teaching is trustworthy because His aim is not self-promotion but the glory of the Father.

For believers today, this verse invites honest self-examination. When we speak, serve, or lead, our motivation matters. Are we seeking recognition, or are we pointing people to God? True spiritual integrity comes when our lives shift from drawing attention to ourselves toward reflecting the glory of the One we represent. When God’s glory becomes the goal, our words gain authenticity and our witness carries greater credibility.
