Matthew 6:3-4 ESV

But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Matthew 6:3–4 shifts the focus of giving from public recognition to private devotion. Jesus challenges the human desire to be seen and applauded, urging instead a kind of generosity that is quiet, even hidden—“do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.” This imagery speaks to a heart so surrendered that it gives instinctively, without calculation or the need for validation. True righteousness isn’t performed for others; it flows naturally from a life centered on God.

There’s a sobering honesty here: it’s easy to do good for the sake of being noticed. But Jesus makes it clear that the reward we seek determines the reward we receive. If we give for human approval, that applause is all we get. But when we give in secret, with pure motives, we entrust our actions to God, who sees fully and rewards faithfully. The deeper invitation is not just to change behavior, but to examine the heart—learning to live for an audience of One.
