Isaiah 53:6 ESV

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

This verse captures both the depth of humanity’s problem and the greatness of God’s mercy. Like sheep that wander without direction, people naturally drift toward their own paths—choices shaped by self-interest rather than God’s will. The verse is strikingly honest: every one has turned aside. Yet the heart of the gospel appears in the second half of the verse. Instead of leaving humanity lost, God placed the weight of our sin on the suffering servant—fulfilled in Christ. Our wandering deserved judgment, but Christ carried the burden we could not bear. For believers today, this truth invites humility and gratitude: humility because we recognize our tendency to stray, and gratitude because God, in His grace, provided a Savior who brings us back into His care.
