Matthew 10:34-36 ESV

Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household.

In Matthew 10:34–36, Jesus confronts us with a hard truth: allegiance to Him will sometimes create division, even within our closest relationships. He is not promoting hostility, but clarity. The gospel draws a line—it exposes loyalties, priorities, and hearts. When Christ becomes Lord, He reorders everything, including family ties. For believers, this means we cannot reduce faith to comfort or cultural Christianity. Following Jesus may cost approval, ease, or even relational harmony. Yet this passage ultimately calls us to a higher love—one that places Christ first, trusting that obedience to Him is worth whatever tension it may bring.
