2 John 1:5-6 ESV

And now I ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another. And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.

In 2 John 1:5–6, the apostle John brings us back to something foundational yet often neglected: love is not a new idea, and it is not a vague feeling. Writing near the end of the first century, likely from Ephesus, John reminds believers that the command to love one another has been there “from the beginning.” But he sharpens it—love is defined by obedience to God’s commands. In a culture that often separates love from truth, this passage refuses to let us do that. Real love walks in truth; it is expressed through daily, concrete obedience. For the church today, that means love is not merely affirmation or sentiment—it is choosing faithfulness to Christ in how we speak, forgive, serve, and remain anchored in sound doctrine. If we claim to love, our lives should show it in consistent, obedient steps.
