2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
In 2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV), Paul recounts the Lord’s words to him: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” That statement cuts against everything in us that wants to appear strong, capable, and self-sufficient. We often pray for God to remove the thorn, fix the struggle, or eliminate the limitation. But sometimes God’s greater purpose is not to subtract the weakness—it is to display His strength through it. Grace is not a vague comfort; it is the active, sustaining power of Christ meeting us right in the place we feel most inadequate.
Paul’s response is striking: he boasts in his weaknesses so that Christ’s power may rest upon him. That is a mature perspective. Instead of hiding our frailty, we learn to surrender it. Weakness becomes the platform for God’s glory. For believers today, this means we do not have to wait until we “have it together” to be useful. The very places we feel most limited may be the very spaces where Christ’s power shines most clearly.
