Matthew 7:12 ESV

So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

In a single sentence, Jesus masterfully distills the entire ethical weight of the Old Testament into a proactive command. While many ancient philosophies suggested a "passive" version of this rule—simply avoiding harm—Jesus calls us to a higher, more dynamic love. He shifts the focus from "Do not do what you hate" to "Actively do what you desire for yourself." This means we don't just wait for others to be kind to us; we take the initiative to be the first to encourage, the first to forgive, and the first to serve. It transforms our daily interactions from a series of transactions into a mission of empathy, challenging us to look at every person we meet and ask: "How would I hope to be treated if I were in their shoes right now?"
