1 John 2:27 ESV
But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.
John reminds believers that God has not left them dependent on human wisdom alone. The “anointing” refers to the Holy Spirit, who lives within every believer, guiding them into truth and guarding them from deception. This does not dismiss the value of faithful teachers, but it centers authority in God’s own presence at work within His people.
For believers today, this verse is both comforting and challenging. It assures us that discernment is possible because the Spirit actively teaches and confirms what is true. At the same time, it calls us to abide—to remain close, attentive, and obedient to Christ rather than drifting into self-reliance or confusion.
The result is a steady faith. When we stay rooted in Christ, listening to the Spirit, we grow in confidence and clarity. Truth is not merely learned; it is lived as we abide in Him day by day.
