And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
In the quiet fields outside Bethlehem, God chose to announce the birth of the Savior not to kings or scholars, but to shepherds—ordinary people faithfully doing their work. The angel’s message turns fear into joy, declaring “good news of great joy” that is meant for all people, reminding us that the gospel begins with grace extended to the humble and the overlooked. At Advent and beyond, this passage invites us to receive Christ with wonder, to lay aside fear, and to rejoice that God has drawn near to us in love.
