Matthew 1:16-17 ESV
And Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.
Matthew’s genealogy reminds us during Advent that God works faithfully through real people and real history to accomplish His promises. The ordered generations declare that the birth of Jesus was not accidental but the fulfillment of God’s long-planned covenant with Abraham and David. As we await Christ, this passage invites us to trust that God is still at work in the unfolding of time, bringing redemption exactly as He has promised.
