Isaiah 11:1-2 ESV

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

Isaiah’s image of a shoot from the stump of Jesse reminds us that God brings new life precisely where hope seems cut down to nothing. From a lineage that looked finished, He raised up the Messiah—full of the Spirit, overflowing with wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord. These verses point us to Jesus as the Spirit-anointed King whose reign restores what is broken in us and around us. In Advent, they invite us to trust that God is still able to bring fresh beginnings, unexpected renewal, and Spirit-filled life from places in our own story that feel like stumps.
