Zechariah 9:9 ESV
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Zechariah 9:9 invites us into the heart of Advent by reminding us that the long-expected King comes in a way no one anticipated—humble, gentle, and bringing salvation. During Advent we wait with the same joyful expectation described in the verse, looking not for a conquering ruler but for a Savior who draws near in compassion and peace. The prophecy points forward to Jesus’ arrival in Bethlehem and ultimately to His final return, calling us to rejoice because God has sent a King who comes to us, not with force, but with a rescuing love that meets us in our need. In this season of waiting, Zechariah’s words steady our hope and stir our joy: the humble King has come, and He is coming again.
